Rules and policies

Swimming: All kids should be comfortable in the water. Swim aids (kickboards, noodles etc) will be allowed and adults will be permitted to assist children.

The lanes will be set up in the 25-yard pool. Participants will sit and slide into the pool and climb out (with or without assistance) to exit the pool. Swimmers will begin one at a time at 5-second intervals. For multiple laps (50 or 100 yards) each participant will swim down the first lane, go under the laneline, swim back in the next lane, go under the next laneline, swim down the next lane, etc. This is called a snake swim... and you should practice going under the lanelines at your own pool before the triathlon. There will be a different pool exit lane depending on the length of the swim.

The format for the swim includes:

Wave Age Swimming Distance
1 6-7 25 yards, 50 yards
2 8-9 25 yards, 50 yards
3 10-12 25 yards, 50 yards, 100 yards
4 13-16 25 yards, 50 yards, 100 yards
5 17-21 25 yards, 50 yards, 100 yards

Bikes: All kids will be followed by an adult on the course! They will carry water, a first-aid kit and a cell-phone for safety. Training wheels are allowed. Parents are advised to take their child's bike to a qualified shop for inspection and adjustment prior to the event. Bicycle mechanics from Trek Bicycles of Tucson will be on site for last minute check-ups. For more information on handcyles and sports-wheelchairs or if you need to borrow equipment please contact Greg at greghock@msn.com. Limited number of bikes, handcycles and race-chairs will be available.

Bike Helmets: Bike helmets must be worn and buckled during the bike portion of the event. Helmets must comply with either CPSC, SNELL or ANSI standards (see sticker inside the helmet). Helmets and help will be available at the start.

Running: To avoid tripping, kids should have shoes that can be secured or be able to properly tie their shoes, preferable using double knots.

Sun Protection, Eyewear: Parents should provide appropriate sun protection in the form of sunscreen and clothing. We'll have sunscreen and help at the start as well.

Children that require prescription glasses must have a headband to hold the glasses in place during the event.

Health and First Aid: Parents should assure that the child is in a physical condition that will permit him/her to participate in the event without jeopardizing his/her health or that of other participants.

There will be water available before, on the course, and following the event. Kids should be reminded to drink at the various aid stations and following the event.

The event will have a medical staff available in the event of an emergency. Parents/guardians should familiarize themselves with the location of the First Aid tent. Please ask the volunteers if you need help finding it.

Medals and awards: all participants (finishers and non-finishers) will receive a medal. All kids will be invited to the awards ceremony and presented with a medal.
